The trend of car production growth continues

In the Czech Republic, 595,580 passenger vehicles were produced in the first five months. This is almost a quarter more than in the same period last year. The growth trend was also confirmed in the month of May, when production increased by 9%. This trend is also reflected in the segment of electric vehicles, of which 72,796 were produced from January to May and their share in total production exceeded 12.2%.

"The revival of the market and the improving situation in the supply chains are also positively reflected in the domestic production of passenger vehicles. It continues the growth trend and attacks the pre-crisis values from 2019 with its five-month and May data. However, lower production results in the bus and motorcycle segment, caused by the cyclical nature of orders and the persistent shortage of a number of components, confirm that with the effects of the unstable situation of the last few years we will also have to count in the course of 2023. On the contrary, very positive news is the increase in the share of the number of produced electric vehicles, which exceeds 12.2% of the total production. Although there is increased interest in these vehicles, especially in Western markets, it is clear that electromobility continues its growth trend. For this reason too, we perceive the maintenance of free parking for electric cars in Prague as one of the key benefits that can effectively support the development of clean mobility in the Czech Republic as well," says Zdeněk Petzl, executive director of the Automobile Industry Association.

Personal vehicles

In the first five months, 595,580 personal vehicles were produced in the Czech Republic, representing a year-on-year increase of 23.7%. There were 72,796 electric vehicles manufactured, accounting for over 12.2% of the domestic automobile production. Among them, 52,668 were battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 20,128 were plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV).

The largest domestic automaker, Škoda Auto, produced 375,981 personal cars in its Czech plants in the first five months, showing a growth of 34.4%. Electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) accounted for 11% of the total brand production, with 41,654 vehicles manufactured. Among them, 34,202 were battery electric vehicles, and 7,452 were plug-in hybrids.

At the Nošovice plant of Hyundai, a total of 145,200 vehicles were produced in the first five months, representing a 7.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Of the total number of vehicles, 18,466 had pure electric propulsion, and 12,676 had plug-in hybrid propulsion. Electric vehicles accounted for nearly 21.4% of the total production.

Similarly, the production figures at the Toyota plant in Kolín also showed a year-on-year increase. A total of 74,399 cars were manufactured, reflecting a 10.9% increase compared to January to May 2022. In absolute terms, this translates to 7,320 more personal cars produced in Kolín during the mentioned period. Hybrid vehicles (HEV) accounted for over 53% of the production.

Buses

In the first five months, 223 fewer buses were produced in the Czech Republic compared to the same period last year. The total production value amounted to 1,883 buses, representing a 10.6% decrease compared to the previous year.

At the IVECO CR plant in Vysoké Mýto, a total of 1,756 buses were manufactured, which is 6.6% less than the same period last year. SOR Libchavy produced a total of 119 buses in the first five months of this year, which is 86 fewer (-42%) compared to the previous year. The company KHMC produced 8 minibuses during this period. In the electric propulsion segment, a total of 5 battery electric (BEV) buses were manufactured at the SOR plant in Libchavy.

Motorcycles

The traditional motorcycle manufacturer JAWA Moto also experienced a five-month decrease in production, mainly due to market saturation with the successful model "Pérák" in the previous year. A total of 325 motorcycles (-68.2%) rolled off the production line of the domestic brand from January to May, representing 698 fewer motorcycles compared to last year.
